After completion of his M.Ch Urology from Sion Hospital, Mumbai, he pursued his focussed interest in the field of Uro-oncology for three years. He has gained thorough and dedicated experience in Uro-oncology and Robotic surgeries for one year each at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and Max Hospital, New Delhi (Vattikuti Foundation Robotic Uro-oncology Fellowship) and a Robotic Urology Fellowship at the Lister Hospital, United Kingdom with a certification by the Royal College of Surgeons of England and British Association of Urological Surgeons, which is one of the most prestigious achievements in this field across the globe. He has been a part of over 280 robotic procedures in Urology, being the primary surgeon in approximately 90 cases.
Dr. Ashwin Sunil Tamhankar has published extensively in the field of uro-oncology and he holds 48 peer reviewed publications in various international and national journals. He has also presented 30 papers in various national and international urology conferences and written 7 book chapters. He is recognised as an invited faculty by the Urological Society of India (USI). He holds several accolades including Dr. G M Phadke travelling fellowship- USI, Dr. Sitharaman memorial prize- USI, Dr. Brij Kihore Patna prize- USI, and USI Got Talent, Shri K. He specialises in the open, laparoscopic (keyhole) and robotic procedures for the cancers in urology involving prostate, kidney, urinary bladder, testis, penis and adrenal. His niche areas of expertise include nerve sparing robotic radical prostatectomy (RARP) for prostate cancer, open radical cystectomy or robot assisted radical cystectomy with total intracorporeal urinary diversion (RARC + IUD) for bladder cancer, open or robot assisted radical nephroureterectomy for the upper tract (ureter) urothelial cancer, robot assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) for kidney cancer, laparoscopic or robot assisted radical nephrectomy (RRN) for kidney cancer, robotic or laparoscopic adrenalectomy, surgeries for penile and testicular cancer including retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND), enhanced recovery after surgery pathway (ERAS) and minimally invasive lymphadenectomy which stands as an inevitable part of any cancer surgery.
In addition to the extirpative cancer surgeries he is a strong believer of preventive oncology and early detection of cancer with the help of various diagnostic pathways like PSA screening, transperineal prostate biopsy and blue light cystoscopy.
